During treatments the phone cannot always be answered, while callers with a toothache want clarity at exactly that moment. Good greetings take care of that.
Two things matter for a practice: telling callers when they will be called back, and pointing emergencies in the right direction immediately. Include the emergency number in every message, including during the day.

“Welcome to dental practice [name]. We are currently treating patients. Please stay on the line and our assistant will help you as soon as possible. If you are in serious pain, please mention it and we will see what is possible today.”
After hours
“Welcome to dental practice [name]. The practice is currently closed. We are available on weekdays from [time] to [time]. For emergencies outside opening hours, please call the on-duty dentist at [emergency number].”
Voicemail
“You have reached the voicemail of dental practice [name]. Please leave your name and phone number and our assistant will call you back today or on the next business day. For emergencies, call [emergency number].”
